Combining form and function, French-door refrigerators come with elegant double doors that open up to an expansive fridge on top and freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out because of their distinctive features, including through-the-door dispensers and higher-end ice makers.

We asked experts like Ladina Schopf, interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects, for tips on choosing the right model. They considered the capacity of storage, layout and energy efficiency, among other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Like the name suggests, the GE Profile series is targeted at the consumer who wants to incorporate cutting-edge technology in their kitchen. This fridge has them all including a Keurig K cup coffee maker inside the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. The refrigerator is expensive, so I expected better.

This fridge is a good choice, despite the blip. It boasts a spacious freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it holds a good amount of frozen food when in comparison to similar models.

The fridge comes with 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment offers 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is on par for the size of a french door fridge with non-plumbed ice & water dispenser door fridge costing this much. It comes with a decent size icemaker in the left door. However, it's not the largest one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to create a an individual storage solution. The GE PYE22PYNFS's interior design is attractive, too. The LED lighting adds an attractive accent. The in-door storage bins come with a third shelf that can be folded down to store tall objects. The drawers include temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, but I found their textured plastic coatings to be a little rough on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator has all the features you would expect from a refrigerator in this price range. This includes Wi-Fi as well as app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your fridge from anywhere in world, and has a ton of customization options. It also alerts you when doors are left open, when your fridge or freezer is in need of defrosting, and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be great it GE PYE22PYNFS offered Precise fill, an option available in a handful of GE refrigerators that allow users to choose the amount of cups they wish to dispense. It does offer an indicator on the display of the fridge to display how much water have left, but it's not as effective as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Designed to look like a seamless part of your kitchen Bosch's French-door refrigerator looks seamless and is one of a kind. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a veggie compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer periods, and two compressors for preserving food items. The Ice maker is among the most efficient we've ever tested and produces pyramid-shaped ice that is low in water consumption. This fridge is perfect for a single family or a kitchenette with an elegant design and top of the highest quality food preservation.

This refrigerator was rated as the most efficient in our Refrigerators Test due to a variety of reasons. Its freezer temperatures remained constant at just above 0°F and never changed more than a fraction - this is crucial to avoid freezing burn. The fridge's fridge section also performed well, achieving the desired initial set temperature within an hour and maintaining that temperature steady over the course of our testing.

Bosch is a household name known for its top-quality appliances. Therefore, it's no surprise that the Bosch counter depth refrigerator can be connected to your home Wi Fi and Bosch's Home Connect. This app allows you to monitor and control your fridge remotely from your smartphone or tablet. The refrigerator is costly however, it offers excellent features and functions at a reasonable cost.

While the fridge is an amazing appliance but it's important to be aware of the limitations. You may need to get creative with tall objects because the fridge has a limited shelf space. LG Counter Depth french door fridge with ice and water Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is an excellent counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage in a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge has an ordinary french style fridge freezer plumbed door design, with two rows of spill-capture shelving and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded to provide more space for taller items. There's also a full-width drawer to store food items and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker making it simple to transfer ice when needed. The freezer also features clever design features, such as sliding drawers that help you sort your things. It has a large bin for storing frozen food and a separate bin for ice.

Another cool feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. It allows you to control the temperature of your fridge, lighting, and more via your smartphone. It's a simple way to keep track of your refrigerator and control it, especially when away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat but it doesn't enhance the performance of the fridge. The refrigerator took longer to defrost food and chill it than the other fridges we test. This is likely due to the greater capacity.

Another issue with the door of this refrigerator. The sunken handles allow shorter people to open them from the bottom. However taller people have a difficult time closing them without slamming them. It would have been much better to have front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is an excellent option for those looking to blend the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with more efficient design. Its capacity is above average for a counter-depth model and it cools well and has a nice layout. It's also a bit cheaper than the top counter depth refrigerator that comes with an icemaker, which makes it a desirable choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good option for those looking for a smallest french door fridge-door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It's a basic fridge that might not be as attractive as some of its competitors however it has enough features to make a an excellent option. Its most notable feature is the temperature adjustable drawer, helps to keep food like vegetables and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a large water and ice maker dispenser.

Another great feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. The drawer lets you use the majority of the refrigerator's cooling power to this area, so it can be used to store food items which need extra attention. You can alter this feature using a slider that's located right on the outside of the drawer. It is also possible to use this to adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge but I've noticed that adjusting the general settings tends to produce better results than specific ones.

During my tests, I found that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different parts of the fridge. Temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge didn't stray very far from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within one degree of 36. This is a good performance, but it isn't quite at the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with a smart thermometer to get more precise measurements of your fridge's temperature.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge proof" finish. It blocks streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
