They work with a key to unlock a cylinder case which then reveals pins which can be aligned to those in the lock body and permitting them to turn a revolving cam, thus opening the door. euro door handles cylinders are available with up to six pins. Doors that are internal and external require different levels of security.

Selecting the right cylinder for your needs is essential; it depends on the way your door and handle are used. Doors that are external Door Handles, for instance, should be fitted with higher security cylinders while doors inside can be secured using an ordinary cylinder. Certain cylinders are equipped with additional features that can increase security, for instance, anti-drill or anti-bump properties.

A euro cylinder should be measured correctly to ensure that it is the right size for your door. The cylinder should be measured from the hole in the center of the fixing screw to the end of the cylinder, including the thumb turn if you have one. It is best to do this with the lock in place however if this is not possible, you may remove it to take measurements. A cylinder that is protruding beyond the handle and escutcheon may be vulnerable to attacks such as snapping locks, so it is crucial that it is not too long.

The design of most newer cylinders comes with anti-drilling as well as bump resistance features. These are designed to reduce attacks by forcing cylinders to turn in a new direction. This will help to deflect the attack and keep your doors safe.

There are also cylinders that are designed to withstand snapping. This is an increasingly common method of attack on cylinders, which is where the break line of the sash lock door handles is smashed with a special tool to break the front of the cylinder to allow the door to be opened. These spring cassettes have been specifically made for use with multipoint locks that are sprung, they will not fit unsprung multipoint handles and you must have a custom hole cut into the backplate to allow them to fit (please check the image for a technical diagram). These cassettes are a solution to damaged or missing cassettes that are in the backplate of uPVC door handles. They are fitted with a square cut-out that accommodates an 8mm spindle and are sold as a set.
