Path of Exile Item Upgrades

The name of the upgrade will indicate the kind of upgrade item the item can receive, as shown below.

A few of the upgrades are also magic or a hybrid of technology and magic, which is shown by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require a charge to use, which is identified by a "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either updated daily or never expire based on the upgrade.

Weapons

The Jeweler can improve the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. The stat boosts can vary depending on the level the jewel is at when it's inserted into jewelry, weapons, or other gear.

The Jeweler is able to create all kinds of gems, except for the rare and legendary ones that you must be at certain levels to gain. Jewels can be replaced by another jewel without destroying the original. You are able to replace the jewel once within an item of equipment.

Utilizing more jewels in a movement will make it feel smoother and is typically done to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. The jewels can also enhance performance and make a surface harder than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to the movement.

In addition to the upgrades mentioned above, the player can also acquire glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. The first trinket that a player will be able to unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player will then be able to acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets, in a similar way to how they acquired weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be placed in any kind of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and only works with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant buffs and skills that are active whenever the hero is not fighting. This lets a hero become more efficient even when not in combat. It can also make up for the lack of a strong team or talent tree slots which would normally be filled by the hero's optimal stats.

A good guideline for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrader-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by items with desirable stats, but less important than the iLevel of the item upgrades to be upgraded. This is especially true if you are looking to upgrade multiple statistics on an item. It's better to upgrade one important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

In the beginning of the game, junglers will usually want to upgrade their yellow trinket to a red in the middle and top players will usually opt for a green or pink ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's map control abilities.
