Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Their choices were influenced primarily by four factors: their personalities and multilingual identities, their ongoing lives and their relationship affordances. The MQ data were analyzed to identify the participants' pragmatic choices. The data were classified according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, the choices were matched with their linguistic performance in DCTs to determine whether they were a reflection of pragmatic resistance or not. Interviewees were also required to explain why they chose a pragmatic behavior in certain situations.

The results of the MQs, DCTs and 프라그마틱 슬롯 조작 z-tests were analysed using descriptive statistics and z tests. It was discovered that the CLKs frequently used phrases like "sorry" and "thank you." Then they were invited to a RI where they were required to think about their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not adhere to the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. They were aware of their practical resistance. They attributed their decision to learner-internal factors like their personality and multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, like relationship advantages. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors helped facilitate an easier performance in regards to the intercultural and linguistic norms of their university.

The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures or consequences they could face when their social norms were violated. They were worried that their native friends would think they are "foreigners" and believe they are unintelligent. This worry was similar to the concerns expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These findings suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are not the default preference of Korean learners. They could still be useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reassess the usefulness of these tests in different contexts and in particular situations. This will help them better understand how different cultural environments can affect the pragmatic behavior of L2 students in the classroom and beyond. This will also help educators develop better methods for teaching and testing Korean pragmatics.
