Overview

Hartpury University, situated five miles from Gloucester, offers fewer than 40 degrees, with a focus on land and animal-related programmes and sports - both areas in which the university excels. High standards have been recognised with a triple gold award - covering student experience, student outcomes and an overall rating - in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework, secured by only 15% of institutions nationally. Courses can be broad (environmental science; agriculture; sport and exercise sciences) or very specific (racehorse performance and rehabilitation; human-animal interaction with psychology). They're in demand, with applications hitting a new high for admissions in September 2023. Hartpury only achieved university status in 2018, but it has a history stretching back to 1948. It shares a campus with Hartpury College (rated outstanding by Ofsted), which offers A-levels, T-levels and diplomas - as well as the opportunity to move into higher education without ever 'leaving'. Students have use of the 72-hectare Home Farm and four others nearby, which combine to make a fully fledged commercial farming business and are home to cows, sheep and arable land. The university punches well above its weight in inter-university competitions, notably rugby - with its semi-professional side finishing mid-table in the second-tier English championship last season.

Paying the bills

Hartpury is unusual in paying a larger bursary to students from wealthier homes. The Hartpury Low Income bursary is worth £400 a year to students where household income is no more than £25,000, but this rises to £1,000 a year for students from homes where income sits between £25,000.01 and £42,000. More than 200 bursaries were paid out last year, making up the lion's share of bursary, scholarship and hardship payments which ultimately benefit around one quarter of Hartpury's students. Care leavers (£1,500 a year), carers (£1,000 a year) and independent students (£1,500 a year) also qualify for bursaries, while a progression scholarship is worth £1,000 in the first year to students who move directly from Hartpury College to the university and achieve at least BBB at A-level or distinction/distinction/merit at BTEC. By far the biggest chunk of scholarship funding is reserved for sports scholarships, reflecting the university's excellence in inter-university competition. Last year, more than £340,000 was shared between 176 sports scholars, with the size of individual awards variable. There are nearly 400 university-owned rooms on campus, which are priced between £5,889 and £7,995 for a 39-week tenancy.

What's new?

Two major capital investments will bring improvements to the student experience in the coming year. The opening of the University Learning Hub will combine social and academic spaces, with a cafe and open-plan social area downstairs and quiet zones, group work pods, classrooms and a library upstairs. The hub will also house a range of student support services spanning careers advice and academic, learning and wellness assistance. A new veterinary nursing centre is also due to open, doubling the size of the existing facilities. The centre will offer students two 40-workspace laboratories in which to develop clinical skills. A £20m government levelling-up investment has seen the creation of a new centre for sports excellence at Hartpury's Five Acres site in the Forest of Dean. Three new degrees launch this month in business management, biological sciences and equine dental science.

Admissions, teaching and student support

Hartpury targets its access and widening participation activities on children living in areas of low participation in higher education; those receiving free school meals or who have been in care; children from ethnic minority backgrounds; and those with non-standard or vocational entry qualifications. Reduced offers of between eight and 16 Ucas tariff points are made for all but foundation-year programmes (where entry criteria are set at a level that already encourages fair access). The exact reduction in tariff depends on the standard offer. So, courses normally offered at 120-128 points will be offered at the reduced rate of 112; those in the range of 104-112 points come down to 96. Teaching is predominantly in-person with 'minimal online provision alongside', the university tells us. This amounts to no more than two hours of online provision per week on average. Those online hours are often made up of lectures delivered remotely by guest speakers, or instances where that style of delivery benefits students. Alongside the mainstream counselling and therapies for students who encounter mental health issues, Hartpury offers a wide selection of wellbeing activities and workshops, including walks and sessions with therapy dogs. It runs an annual 'Wellfest' during freshers' week to promote services and awareness of issues, wbc247 with more than 90 exhibitors taking part. As part of enrolment, all students complete mandatory workshops and presentations on healthy relationships, safeguarding, substance misuse awareness and social tolerance.
