Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Origins

It is common for a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock outfit. The group began as a group and released two albums - 1979's self titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a diverse musical background their biggest breakthrough was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its own set of issues. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to release a hit single or they would rescind the album. Luckily for Toto they did, with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experiences, as the band members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their distinctive sound has become the standard of the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. But the album also contains some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song is a mix of folk and the distorted AOR that could appear completely unnatural, but actually works extremely well.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier performances.

The studio album came out a few months later, and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of it. In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
