1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, audi lost key shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially when you're looking at a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems within your vehicle.
