Three Wheeled Buggies

Sturdy frame

Figures have just been released that show that the three-wheeled buggie - a symbol of the noughties of more money than wisdom - is in steep decline. They are being replaced by four-wheelers that can be more versatile in terrain, yet still look elegant and easy to push.

The principle is that the larger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy ground and rough pavements. With larger wheels front and back makes it much easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy out with a newborn as well as a 3 year old and found that it was able to withstand grass, cobbles rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said it felt solid to push, and extremely solid on rough terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and need to be pumped up occasionally, have built-in suspension. This was very comfortable for my children.

Another thing to take into consideration is the size and shape. You'll want it to be large enough to accommodate your child's comfort. You will also want it to be able to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies will have an option to lie flat completely while others will only allow a parent facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and walking in muddy areas. This buggy can be used as a single unit from birth, and then expands to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers up to age four and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and a spacious padded seat unit. The storage options are good as well, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets on the hood, and a handy pouch on the back of the seat unit.

Wheels with a larger diameter

Larger wheels give your buggy more stability when driving over rough terrain. This is perfect for off-road buggies. They also make it easier to move the pushchair around tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have swivel front wheels to help you navigate around tight corners, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with which they can be pushed. This can also help if you bump into the roots of a tree or stray road, as the front wheel can be lifted up a bit to prevent you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres which allow them to handle a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they're prone to punctures, so you'll need to keep a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy.

Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo lux are some of our favourite 3-wheelers. These buggies, according to MFM's Kath, have larger wheels that according to her "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles" and are able to go up or down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which, in her words "smoothes out bumps very effectively".

The downside of having bigger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite wide and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This can be an issue if you're using it as a jogger or to to get through doorways that are narrow when you're out and out and about. Most models come with compact folding options that permit you to take off the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the primary benefits to a three wheel buggy is that it's much more maneuverable especially with a child in the back. The way they are built means that the front wheels turn on a dime and are incredibly easy to maneuver, making them ideal for difficult terrains such as parks, cobbles and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her newborn and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the terrain with the swivel rear wheel particularly useful. I was also amazed by how well it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. I found it extremely steady when I was driving downhill or over uneven ground."

The only downside to this incredible maneuverability is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel buggy might make it difficult to squeeze into tight spaces. This is something you need to keep in mind if your home area is an urban area. If this is the case then a four-wheeled buggy might be a better option for you.

Kath, our MFM reviewer, also appreciated the spaciousness of the buggy. There's a huge easily accessible basket that's quite spacious for a buggy this small and there's an excellent zip-up pouch on the back of the seat unit and two smaller mesh pockets in the hood to keep your keys and phone.
