The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. They decide to record a new album and change their name an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
