The results showed that CLKs on average, did not follow the norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this despite the fact that they could produce native-like patterns. Furthermore, they were clearly aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their choice to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also spoke of external factors like relational benefits. They also discussed, for instance, how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform better in terms of the linguistic and cultural standards of their university.

However, the interviewees also expressed concerns about the social pressures and punishments they could be subject to if they violated their local social norms.
